When designing a kitchen for a lake house, the goal is often a little different than with the typical lake house project. The goal isn’t just about everyday function, but has the added element of creating a space that’s connected to its surroundings.

For this lake house in Shelburne, the vision was clear from the start: a timeless kitchen with a soft, classic palette and thoughtful details that feel as though they’ve always belonged.

The Starting Point

The existing space offered a great foundation, but lacked the character and cohesion the homeowners were looking for. The goal was to transform it into a kitchen that felt both elevated and relaxed, something that could handle everyday use while still feeling special enough for weekends at the lake.

Design Goals from Day One

From the earliest conversations, a few key priorities guided the design:

  • A timeless style that wouldn’t feel dated over time

  • Cabinetry with a furniture-like feel

  • A soft, neutral color palette with subtle contrast

  • Elevated details that add interest without overwhelming the space

  • A layout that feels open, easy, and natural to move through

Materials & Style: Classic, Layered, and Built to Last

The finished kitchen leans into a classic look, grounded in craftsmanship and subtle detailing. Every element was chosen to feel intentional, without feeling overly designed.

Inset Cabinetry with Thoughtful Details

At the heart of the design is Plato Woodwork cabinetry, known for its precision and quality.

  • Inset cabinet doors create a clean, tailored look that instantly feels timeless

  • Upper drawers feature a flat-front design, while lower drawers incorporate subtle framing for added dimension

  • Shaped toe-kicks introduce a soft, custom detail that reinforces the furniture-like feel

A Soft, Coastal-Inspired Palette

The color palette strikes a balance between warmth and contrast:

  • “Essential White” cabinetry along the perimeter keeps the space feeling light and open

  • A “Harbour Grey” island anchors the room and adds depth without overpowering the design

Together, these tones reflect the natural surroundings while maintaining a refined, cohesive look.

A Statement Cooking Area

The range wall was designed to be both functional and visually striking:

  • A tall marble backsplash extends upward, creating a focal point

  • A slim shelf adds both display space and practicality

  • A custom hood assembly completes the look, tying the entire wall together

A Furniture-Style Hutch

One of the most distinctive features in this kitchen is the hutch:

  • Glass mullion doors showcase dishes and glassware

  • The design mimics a standalone furniture piece, adding character and charm

  • It creates a natural moment of visual interest without interrupting the flow of the kitchen

The Final Result

The finished space feels exactly as intended: timeless, relaxed, and quietly detailed.

It’s a kitchen that doesn’t rely on trends to stand out. Instead, it leans into craftsmanship, proportion, and subtle design choices that will continue to feel relevant for years to come.

Most importantly, it feels at home in its setting: supporting everything from quiet mornings by the lake to gathering with family and friends.
